A Historic Trip Around PSC Campus

Last week an interested PSC alum stopped by the archives for a short visit. He reminisced about his time at the college and talked about former friends and classmates. Before he left, he mentioned to me how much the campus has changed. He talked about the (relatively) recent construction of the library and gymnasium. This conversation made me think about the physical transformation of Philander Smith. I searched through our photograph collection and was struck by the number of structures that have been erected and dismantled. I decided to scan a few of my favorites and put them on the blog. As always, if something catches your attention, you can always come to the archives to get more information.
This is a picture of Webb Hall taken during the early 1900s. Webb Hall served as the girls' dormitory for many years.

This is a picture of Budlong Hall taken in 1890. This building was constructed in 1883 and remained standing until 1963.

We have several more pictures of PSC buildings in the archives. Seeing these pictures firsthand will give you a new appreciation of how PSC has grown.

Basketball in Blytheville

Yesterday evening I was lucky enough to travel to Blytheville to watch the PSC Junior Varsity basketball team play. The guys played smart, competitive basketball and ended up winning their two games. On the trip home I started to think about how basketball has changed over the years and the game’s rich tradition at Philander Smith. If you visit the archives, one of the first things you’ll notice is a display honoring Mr. Hubert “Geese” Ausbie.  Mr. Ausbie attended Philander Smith from 1956-60 and, during his junior campaign, was the nation’s third leading scorer.
Although not all of our athletes go on to play basketball professionally, they all leave Philander Smith with a first rate education and a commitment to hard work. Last night our team proved that, in order to win, you have to play hard, and play smart. These winning qualities have not changed. But, as you can see from this picture, the lengths of the basketball shorts sure have.

PSC Archives Have the Blues.

If you have some free time on campus and want to listen to some great music, take a trip over to the PSC Archives. We have an impressive selection of old blues music along with some great classical records. The records were donated by Mr. Lawrence Hamilton. The collection includes work from Mississippi John Hurt, Fred McDowell, Pinetop Perkins and many other great musicians. We have a record player available and encourage any student interested in learning more about music to visit.

Congratulations to the Spring 2011 Honors Convocation Scholars!

Those who attended the Honors Convocation today had an opportunity to see some awesome students receive recognition for excellent grades. Some of the very best students were offered an opportunity to apply for membership into the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, an organization that was established at Tennessee State University in 1937.

This is a major accomplishment for these students and we hope they take the day to celebrate their achievements. More importantly, these students should keep in mind that their achievements will live on in the college's archives to inspire future generations.

This first picture offers a perfect example. This picture was taken in 1966. In this picture we see  Ms. Etta Williams (a PSC student) receiving an award from Dr. Freeman, a former President of Alpha Kappa Mu. This picture was taken at Philander Smith during the AKU's annual meeting.

This second picture shows Ms. Marian McPherson shaking hands with Dr. Annie Williams during the Spring 2011 Honors Convocation.

We believe that future PSC students will be inspired by the actions of today's scholars. Let us also keep Dr. Kimbrough's words in mind and continue to strive for excellence in everything we do!
